Current Driven Spin Torque

The spin Hall effect (SHE) in heavy-metal/ferromagnet bilayers generates a pure transverse spin current from in-plane charge current, allowing for efficient switching of spintronic devices with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The spin current exerts an antidamping (Slonczewski-like) torque in an adjacent ferromagnetic layer, producing an effective out-of-plane field proportional to the in-plane charge current density and the parallel in-plane magnetization component. This technology might be used to make low-power solid state magnetic memory.
